United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) applauded Afghanistan's National Environmental Protection Agency (NEPA), which announced the establishment of an internationally recognized first is the national state parks.
USAID is providing major funding which led to the creation of parks, including support for WCS to perform the initial wildlife survey, identify and describe the boundaries of national parks, and working with local communities and the provincial government. WCS also developed a management plan for the park, helping the government to hire and train local rangers, and providing assistance to the Afghan government to design legislation allowing the park to be created.
Band-e-Amir has become a destination for tourists since 1950, with the peak of visits in the 1970s. Travel is almost entirely absent during the war years between 1979-2001. Today, the Band-e-Amir visited annually by thousands of tourists and religious pilgrims Afghanistan as well as many foreigners currently living and working in their country. The park is near the Valley of Bamiyan, where giant statues of Buddha 1500 years was destroyed by the Taliban once stood.
